Achieving the correct tongue weight is essential for safe and stable towing. The tongue weight, which is the downward force exerted on the hitch ball by the trailer, should ideally be 10-15% of the total trailer weight. For example, a 5,000-pound trailer should have a tongue weight between 500 and 750 pounds. Maintaining this range ensures better steering, improved braking control, and reduced trailer sway, minimizing the risk of accidents. Too little tongue weight can cause the trailer to fishtail, while excessive weight can strain the tow vehicle and compromise handling.
